What's this Grackle doing?

He's looking for food. The Grackle sticks his closed beak into the soil, opens his beak after it's submerged in the ground then peers sideways down into the hole he's made. He's looking for worms, bugs, food. If he sees anything tastey he can grab it with his beak and swallow it down.
